IS A GOLDEN RIGHT FOR YOU?
As wonderful and versatile as the Golden Retriever is, they might not be the right breed for every family. Goldens do shed a lot. During certain seasons you may have to vacuum and dust multiple times a day. If you like a very tidy house, this might not be the breed for you.
Golden Retrievers were developed as a hunting retriever so they require exercise, and they can be extremely mouthy. This is a breed that needs to be a part of the family and actively involved with the members of that household. They will not do well in a home where they are left alone for hours. If you have the time to give, Golden Retrievers are very intelligent, and they thrive with attention and training.

Golden Retrievers can have health issues so it is extremely important to get a puppy whose parents, at a minimum, have undergone health screenings for Hip dysplasia, Elbow dysplasia, Cardiac screening for SAS (a heart condition that can cause sudden death in young dogs), and annual Eye screenings. Many breeders are also doing DNA testing on both parents before breeding.

Older dog or Puppy?
You may really want a Golden Retriever, but a young puppy may not be the right fit for you.
Instead, consider adopting an older puppy or adult Golden. They often have some training and can handle being alone for a few hours.
Older dogs become available for many reasons. Sometimes breeders place retired show dogs from their kennel. Or they might come from rescue groups, shelters, or former owners. Whatever the reason, an older dog can be a great choice if you want to skip the puppy stage.
Golden Retrievers are adaptable and can bond well with new families. Show them kindness, set clear rules, and offer gentle training—and you’ll be amazed at how well they fit in.

Consider Rescue
Golden Retriever Rescues can be another alternative for finding a wonderful companion. It can be very rewarding to help a dog in need by providing it with a forever home. Central Texas has a rescue dedicated to the breed and has helped connect many families with a Golden needing a second chance.
